Chief Minister’s Northern Territory History Book Award

The Chief Minister’s Northern Territory History Book Award was established in 2004 to recognise outstanding contributions to published histories about the Northern Territory.

The Chief Minister’s Northern Territory History Book Award recognises the most significant book about Northern Territory history published in the previous 12 months.

To be eligible books must be a work on NT history, written in English or one of the First Nations languages of the Northern Territory. The Awards are judged by a panel of industry experts including academics, historians and/or curators working in the field of Northern Territory history.

The winner of the Award is announced at a ceremony at the NT Library and receives $1,000 in prize money.

Key dates for 2024

  • Entries open Monday 26 February 2024
  • Entries close Monday 8 April 2024
  • Shortlisted entries announced by end of June 2024
  • Winners announced at the Awards Ceremony in July 2024

Eligibility

To apply for the Chief Minister’s Northern Territory History Book Award your book must be all of the following:

  • a work on Northern Territory history
  • published in English or one of the First Nations languages of the Northern Territory
  • offered for general sale published between 1 January and 31 December 2023
  • you must be an Australian citizen or permanent resident to enter.

You may nominate yourself or enter on behalf of another author if you have their permission to do so.

How to enter

You must submit your entry using the online entry form. You must then send four copies of your entry to Library & Archives NT:

Judging Criteria

  • Significance of contribution to the field/broader NT history.
  • Depth of research, evidence of a wide variety of sources used.
  • Originality of research/subject/approach.
  • Strong central thesis presented. 
  • Correct, appropriate language, spelling and grammar. Well proofed.
  • Correct, appropriate referencing/citations.
  • Appropriate use of indexes, glossaries, appendices.
  • Well structured. Logical flow of chapters/sections. Good pacing.
  • Appropriate use of good quality images and/or maps, correctly attributed.
  • Good design and aesthetics.
