'Tiwi Memories of World War II - Telling Stories the Women's Way'

As part of the exhibition Tiwi Heroes: WW2 Encounters we will be presenting a special event: ‘Tiwi Memories of World War II – Telling Stories the Women’s Way’.

Tiwi men’s war efforts have been recognised in Australian military history, however little is known of women’s experiences and memories. 80 years after the Bombing of Darwin, this event offers an opportunity to learn more about her-story.
 
Join respected Tiwi researcher Mavis Kerinaiua, granddaughter of the famous Tiwi warrior Louis Munkara, to learn about women’s perspectives of the war.
 
Facilitated by historian, author and ANU researcher Laura Rademaker, you will hear about the impacts the Japanese invasion had on Tiwi families, the women’s experiences of the early mission, the important war work they undertook during the military occupation and how the wartime experience transformed Tiwi life.

This presentation is supported by the project: Beyond Reconciliation: Truth-Telling for Indigenous Wellbeing and the Health of the Nation, an initiative of the Australian National University. The project seeks to tell histories in ways that empower Indigenous people and communities and promote Indigenous wellbeing.
