'In Memory of Ningardi' by Charlie King

Library & Archives NT together with the City of Darwin are honoured to be presenting In Memory of Ningardi by Charlie King.

A second generation survivor of the Stolen Generation, Charlie credits the lessons learnt from his parent's forbidden love story and the ongoing guidance from his mother Ningardi, as contributing factors which allowed him to face multiple challenges growing up. 

Ningardi, a descendant of the Gurindji people, was forcibly removed from her family due to the harsh and misguided assimilation policies of the time. She would end up placed in Darwin’s Kahlin Compound at Myilly Point, eventually making the trek back to her Country later on in life. 

Through recounting his mother’s experiences in a combination of oral and audio-visual storytelling, Charlie will share how her influence has impacted generations across time and how love continues on in those that survive her. His daughter Emma will provide her own unique perspective on the impact of the loss of the family matriarch.
