Surveying Darwin 1869
Darwin’s waterfront area today is alive with locals and tourists enjoying restaurants, recreational activities and the popular deckchair cinema. But one hundred and fifty years ago it was home to the main camp of the Northern Territory Survey Expedition. Led by the South Australian Surveyor-General, GW Goyder, this expedition laid the groundwork for the modern city of Darwin. The Library’s collection of original sepia-toned stereoscopic images taken by expedition photographer Joseph Brooks captures their work.
