Introduction to the 'Meeting Ground' exhibition

Meeting Ground: Territory Encounters, conceptualises the Northern Territory as a place of meetings.  Principally, as the meeting place between First Nations Traditional Owners and subsequent arrivals on Country.

Since the arrival of the Makassans and Dutch explorers, mobile, ‘global’, extractive cultures and ideologies have met country-bound, Indigenous regenerative ones here, to this day.

A plethora of people of rich and diverse inheritance have been drawn to the Territory for a myriad of reasons. Their fates, achievements, experiences and legacies are remarkable, creating the Northern Territory we know today. The Territory is where polarities blend and merge:  the desert and the tropics. Asia and Australia, black and white.

‘Meeting’ is reflected in the diversity of the Territory’s population, especially amongst those very many groups, families and individuals of mixed heritage.

This exhibition focuses on the definitive and transformative meetings that have occurred in the Territory.

From ‘meeting’, harmony and tension emerge.
