Gathering of people around a table of books that are for sale
Description

Every weekend in the Territory, lawn-sales are listed on Facebook, Gumtree, or the ‘Classies’. Posters adorn roadside poles, posts and round-abouts, announcing the potential of finding something unique, nifty or practical.

For our final 2018 Curator’s Cut screening, we head south to Alice Springs to discover that the lawn sales of Alice are as awesome as the lawn sales of Darwin. The Search for the Shell Encrusted Toilet Seat (1985) features passionate and curious characters of the Alice Springs lawn sale scene, with commentary from anthropologist Jeff Collmann (26 mins).

For this special festive season screening, please bring along your most precious, odd, fantastical or curious items purchased from a yard/lawn/garage sale. Our panel of collectors and sociologists will offer feedback and discuss lawn sales’ pros and cons (if any).

(Please note that to enter the Library you must go through Parliament House’s security. Please refrain from bringing large and sharp treasures).

This is part of the Northern Territory Library’s Curator’s Cut film series, screening rare films from the Library collection followed by a discussion with experts on the subject
