Winner Announced | 2025 Northern Territory History Book Award

Today we congratulate Professor Clare Wright OAM, winner of the 2025 Northern Territory History Book Award for her remarkable book Ṉäku Dhäruk The Bark Petitions: How the People of Yirrkala Changed the Course of Australian Democracy.

This work tells the story of the Yirrkala Bark Petitions, one of Australia's founding democratic documents, and the Yolŋu leaders whose actions in the 1960s laid the foundations for the recognition of Aboriginal land rights in Australia.

We also extend our warmest congratulations to this year’s outstanding finalists, whose works continue to enrich our understanding of Northern Territory history.

Thank you to all the authors, researchers and storytellers helping to preserve and share the stories of this place.
